Whether you are looking for contemporary designs, commercial interior design ideas, modern furniture or historic relics for your home, design news can offer practical ideas. Many people like to know what they are looking for prior to calling the professional interior designer, so they won’t get talked into anything they may not want. Generally, the interior designer will be a good listener and communicator, knowledgeable in everything from interior design furniture and lighting to building regulations and kitchen storage space. So what does the moment hold for interior design?

Green building materials, furniture and interior design services are making design headlines all around the world, but particularly in America, in places like Seattle, Portland, New York and Austin. Last year, green building technology found a friend in the money-conscious consumer who was looking to save on his or her energy costs. Traditionally, sustainable design had been seen as “pricey” and “hardly worth it,” but now prices have dropped and consumers are beginning to see where pennies can be pinched.

The LEED standard became the predominant licensing agency and Energy Star appliances became mandatory for government buildings in many states. More than 14% of all US cities have some kind of “green real estate” program in place and insurers agree to protect sustainable houses. These breakthroughs are clearing the way for a more responsible and environmentally-friendly society.

Some people get a little bit scared when it comes to making interior design changes. Of course some people become concerned because things can get costly when you start considering making major changes. That is a real consideration that should be taken into account. But if all you are looking to do is make some simple and inexpensive changes, you should try to not worry too much about it. It is, after all, your home, and there is no “right” way for it to be decorated or designed. The most important thing to consider is how you will feel living in it. If others like the way it looks, that’s great, but in the end, you have to be the one who is happy.

Each room that you decide to take on should be seen as an opportunity to express yourself. Updating to a more modern interior design will be more or less involved depending on what you are starting with in the first place. If you are looking at a major project, you may want to look at possibly consulting with a professional interior designer. If that is not something that you are interested in, you may want to at least consider getting yourself some interior design software that may help you to visualize what your finished project will look like.

The kind of space you are starting with is very important. A major goal of interior design that is often overlooked is taking the space you are starting with, and making it work well with a blend of both function and form. Too many people focus solely on how a room will look when a project is complete. This is fine if you are simply trying to set up a showroom, but most people actually will be living in the homes they are designing and they cannot afford to have any non-functional space.

If you are dealing with a small area, like a condominium, you will want to do all that you can to make the most of limited space. Designating certain areas for multiple purposes just makes sense. The area that serves as a dining area may also have to pull double duty for entertaining when guests come to visit. On the other hand, if you are considering loft interior designs, you will want to take into consideration the possibility of smaller pieces of furniture looking lost without some design help.

Whatever your situation, try to make designing the interior of your home fun. If you share the space with another person, be sure to consult them during the designing phase. Get as detailed as possible as you come up with a plan for your dream home. Do things right the first time and you will not find yourself remodeling again in two or three years.

Loft interior design is a world apart from interior design for a home or apartment. A loft creates a challenge because it has a wide, open space that needs to be made into separate living areas. Keep reading this article to discover some great ideas for loft interior design.

If you have a large area that you need to separate, try long, flowing, curtains. This will divide the room into two different living areas and give the room an elegant touch. If you don’t want the expense of curtains, you may try a folding room divider. These room dividers can be found in many different designs. You can even choose a divider that has hand painted decorative scenes to add an artistic flair to the room.

Furniture selection should complement the brick wall of your loft. Furniture should be somewhat plain with neutral colors. If you want to add a splash of color or design, you can do so by choosing a few area rugs for the floor.

If your loft has contains smaller rooms, a great idea to give the appearance of a larger room is to add mirrors. A mirror can make any room look bigger than it is. Just take great care to secure you mirror tightly to the wall. A lot of lofts have brick walls and therefore it may be a little difficult to hang any type of picture or mirror.

If you have excess lighting in your loft, play this up by adding bright cheery throw pillows and other accents. If you love plants, a loft may be the perfect place for them if you have skylights. Loft interior design should always reflect your tastes.

Don’t forget to decorate your walls with pictures and your favorite artwork. Always make sure that the wall decorations that you choose stay with the theme of the room. You may need special wall mounts to hang your wall decorations due to the fact that most loft walls are made from brick. You can check with your local hardware store for the needed equipment.

A loft will not have a lot of storage space, so it is important that you try to get a bed that has drawers underneath. You can also put a chest at the foot of the bed for added storage for bed linens and pillows. There are great companies out there where you can choose a custom closet to fit your loft area. These closets are attractive and easy to assemble.

Loft interior design is not that difficult once you get the “feel” for the loft. If you have a loft consider yourself blessed with a unique roomy space that has endless possibilities. Happy decorating!

How to Decorate your Space with Wall Pictures

If a room in your house lacks character, by simply placing some fine art prints on the walls can actually make quite an impact. Wall pictures are a necessary accessory in your home and are great to tie in with the room’s style and color accent. Before you go off to buy some new pictures for your walls there are a few things you need to plan and decide upon. Here is a home interior design guide on how to decorate your space with wall art.

The kind of home you have and the mood, ambience and style of decor you create, should be perfectly designed to suit your lifestyle. Deciding on a style for your room should be determined by the lifestyle you choose and not by what’s the latest home interior design trend.

Whichever room you are wanting to decorate, whether it be your bedroom, living area, kitchen or office space, you need to decide what you want to get out of that space. For example:

  • do you want to hold dinner parties or entertain?
  • do you want a quiet retreat to get away from the hustle and bustle?
  • Is this an area for the kids to play in?
  • Is this a room for your hobby?

Once you have decided what you want to use the room for, you can now choose a color theme to suit the function of the room. For example, mellow greens and neutrals for your ‘quiet retreat room’, lively yellow for the kids room, or pale tranquil blue for your office space.

So far we have established the function and color of the room in question, this then gives us the basis on choosing the right art prints for the area.

For example:

  • bright colorful cartoon pictures for the kids room
  • mellow pastel floral pictures for your quiet retreat area, or
  • tranquil landscape and scenic pictures for your office space

Choose your Style

Like paint color, artwork can immediately establish or change a room’s mood. Not only can it pull the room together, but you can use it to create a style uniquely your own.

  • traditional & classic
  • modern
  • contemporary
  • fun & entertaining
  • casual
  • romantic

The style of the room is totally dependent on your own personal taste and this is the time when you can inject your own personality into the room through artwork and textured accessories.

Suggested art picture styles:

Fun & Entertaining: Pictures can include bright colors both in the print and on the frame. Fun and entertaining pictures can include kittens and puppies, or comedian actors such as the Three Stooges or Laurel & Hardy.

Modern: With the strong black accents in the framed iron-work and the tapestries, striking black and white photos are a natural choice for a modern and sophisticated look.

Calm Retreat: To reinforce the mood of a nestled, cozy retreat, use artwork with neutral, earthy colors and a horizontal landscape subject.

You can even mix and match different styles to create a unique style of your own. For example, frame traditional black and white photo prints in a modern black iron frame.

Arranging and Hanging your Pictures

In order to get the maximum effect of your wall pictures in terms of adding character and a focal point to the room, you need to decide where and how you want to hang them.

Here are some suggestions to help you decide how to get the best effects from your pictures:-

Modern Gallery Look: To create a modern art gallery feel, particularly nice in hallways, lobbies and stairwells, give each piece ample breathing room. Stand at the center of the first piece and take one swift, or two small steps along the wall. This is a good center for the next piece.

Above a Sofa: When placing art above furniture such as a sofa, you need to hang the picture about six to nine inches above the sofa, or at eye level.

Cluster Arrangements: Tightly group an even number of pictures together to give a statement or a focal point. This works on either large or small wall spaces, depending on the look you want.

In a row: By placing an odd number of pictures in a horizontal line to each other gives balance and the sense of space. This works well in hallways or stairwells.

By deciding where and how to hang your pictures, whether it be a tight cluster or a single print above a sofa, you can then determine the size and shape of the pictures you need to buy.

When you have decided on the room’s function, color and style, you are in a much better position to go shopping for wall pictures that fit in with the overall theme.

The other day a real estate agent whose listings I stage for sale introduced me to someone as a “designer”. I didn’t want to take the time to correct him, but I thought to myself, “This isn’t the first time I’ve heard people use ‘designer’ erroneously. It’s often used to label someone who’s an interior decorator. So, why does everyone lump us all in one category, when we all clearly do something different?”

To put the differences succinctly:

  • Interior Design involves, among many other things, the preparation of documents often by a licensed professional for the construction of an interior space such as plans and elevations, and details and specifications, including lighting, power and communication locations, materials and finishes, and furniture layouts.
  • Interior Decorating involves the adornment of surfaces in the interior space, such as fabrics, wall coverings, furniture, decorative accessories, flooring, light fixtures etc., and takes into account the lifestyle, taste, needs and preferences of the user of the space. While interior designers may decorate, interior decorators don’t design.
  • Home Staging is preparing the home for sale through updates and “decorating” so that it appeals to the broadest range of buyers for the market that the home is in.
  • Interior Redesign is often done by home stagers for homeowners not currently selling because it employs many of the same principles that home stagers use, such as primarily using what furniture and decorative accessories the homeowner already has, with an eye towards the future sale of the home.

Now, let’s explore each one more in-depth.

Interior Design

According to the National Council for Interior Design Qualifications (NCIDQ):

  • Interior design is a multi-faceted profession in which creative and technical solutions are applied within a structure to achieve a built interior environment.
  • These solutions are functional, enhance the quality of life and culture of the occupants and are aesthetically attractive.
  • Designs are created in response to and coordinated with thebuilding shell and acknowledge the physical location and social context of the project.
  • Designs must adhere to code and regulatory requirements, and encourage the principles of environmental sustainability.
  • The interior design process follows a systematic and coordinated methodology, including research, analysis and integration of knowledge into the creative process, whereby the needs and resources of the client are satisfied to produce an interior space that fulfills the project goals.

The American Society of Interior Designers (ASID) is the leading organization for interior design professionals. Certain levels of its members must meet certain education, work experience and examination requirements administered by the NCIDQ. Further, some states have licensing requirements for interior designers which include the passage of this exam. ASID also has continuing education requirements for its members.

Interior Decorating

No wonder people often confuse Interior Decorating with Interior Design. Even I had trouble finding a definition for Interior Decorating. Often it said “see interior design”.

Perhaps its best to understand interior decorating as it exists in contrast to interior design:

  • An interior decorator would select floor coverings based upon the tastes and lifestyle of the client, whereas the interior designer would take it a step further and look at usage, sound transference, flammability, etc.
  • An interior decorator would select lighting fixtures, whereas the interior designer would plan for the location of lighting and ensure that it is in compliance with building and safety codes.
  • An interior decorator does not need to have any formal education and/or work experience, testing or licensing, whereas an interior designer does.

When it comes to home improvements, you often hear the terms interior decorator or interior designer. Usually these terms are interchanged, but did you know these two actually differ? Let us learn and differentiate the two, should you be interested to pursue a career in either one of them.

First let us look at what an interior designer does. They are the creative professionals who work on the structural aspect of a house. They need to make designs, sketches, plans under strict safety codes and regulations. But prior to this, an interior designer is required to take classes to get at least a diploma, better yet a bachelor’s degree or even proceed for masters. After that, they are still subjected to licensing exams, which would allow them to work especially in certain states. Some interior designers who get enough education and experience can also proceed to work as certified architects.

An interior decorator on the other hand does not require that much formal training and a license in order to work. Their training demands are less rigorous. Some decorators are self-taught, as long as they have the right aesthetics to beautify a space, while others can opt to take short training programs or an associate’s degree in a community college.

The nature of their work also varies in that an interior decorator is concerned mainly on the appearance of a space. This would include things like what colours the walls should be, what drapes would complement it, how many throw pillows to include, or should you be placing a carpet in the area. They can even change the floors or mouldings on the ceiling, but they cannot change any standing structure. Just as their title imply, they only make decorative alterations and improvements.

Interior designers work more closely with architects, although designers cannot alter or move load-bearing structures, they can change the non-load bearing fixtures in a space. To do this, they would need a design, which can range from a sketch to a plan which he can also render in 3D. They also work with other elements such as lighting, doors, or windows. It is also their job to see to it that a design falls within safety regulations.

A designer’s concern is more about the total appearance of an area, including its architectural elements, while a decorator is limited only on good arrangements for a better living space.

If an interior decorator selects the kind of furniture to place in a room, the interior designer goes steps further because they know how to design, select materials and make furniture. Another thing is that an interior designer focuses on one area, while a decorator can work with various spaces.
